Vancouver's Downtown Community Court
Court Statistics
Early results from the Downtown Community Court suggest it is making progress at helping offenders break their cycles of crime by addressing the health and social problems driving their behaviour.
The court uses a collaborative case management approach to assess the needs of offenders and direct them to the health and social services programs they need to change their behaviour, reconnect with their community, and make amends for the harm they have done.
Data about the numbers of accused who appeared in community court, their charges, and how their cases were concluded are drawn from JUSTIN, British Columbia’s criminal justice system database.
Data about the health and social services provided to offenders, and the community service they performed, are collected by community court team members.
A longer-term evaluation of the community Court will be conducted by the criminology department
at Simon Fraser University
to determine if the community court results in more successful outcomes for victims, offenders and the community, and whether it helps the justice system operate more efficiently.
