Vancouver's Downtown Community Court
Evaluating the Court
Vancouver's Downtown Community Court is being evaluated to assess whether the community court pilot project leads to more successful outcomes for victims, offenders and the community – and whether it helps the justice system operate more efficiently and effectively.
The evaluation is being carried out in two stages. The first interim evaluation report was released in Sept. 2010. This report focuses on the project implementation and delivery and court-process efficiency results for the first 12 months of the community court’s operation. The final evaluation report is planned for 2012 and will report on all aspects of the court’s progress, including changes in offenders’ behaviour.
The original evaluation framework was developed by a team of researchers from Simon Fraser University, school of criminology in January 2008. The first interim report was written by staff from the ministries of Attorney General and Public Safety and Solicitor General, with advice on methodology and analysis from the SFU research team.
The evaluation will inform the justice system about lessons learned from the pilot and ways to carry out its business more effectively.
